Bringing in the Chinese New Year with Cherry Blossom Trees

Much joy and excitement goes into welcoming the Lunar New Year in the Chinese Tradition.

Cherry Blossom trees are often used as a part of celebrating Chinese New Year in that lanterns hang on them for use in the Lantern Festival. On the 15th day of Chinese New Year, children go out at night to temples carrying paper lanterns and solve riddles on the lanterns. The lanterns symbolize good luck and peace to prayer in what is a cheerful environment in the light of the full moon. This officially ends the Chinese New Year celebrations.

Even though Cherry trees grow naturally in China, their deep history is mostly always associated with Japan and goes back hundreds of years. Due to its short blooming cycle, the cherry tree represents the fleeting nature of life and draws its audience through the beauty of the blossoms in masse transmitting amazing bursts of color and life.

Here in the United States, Washington, DC’s well-known cherry trees grow in three park locations: around the Tidal Basin in West Potomac Park, in East Potomac Park (Hains Point), and on the grounds of the Washington Monument. There are a variety of cherry trees there. The dates they bloom vary from year to year thereby determining the dates of the National Cherry Blossom Festival. The chief horticulturist for the National Park Service forecasts these dates with this year’s dates being March 20-April 13, 2014 according to the DC Transit Guide. The blossom is known to be at its peak when 70 percent of the blossom is open. Make Be-Leaves can create these trees with blossoms at any point of the blooming process as illustrated in the range of photos here.

Complex Two-floor Mall Display

First, we built a custom 14 ft. tall x 14 ft. wide canopied Cherry Blossom Tree – with just a hint of the cherry blossom showing timing it at the very beginning of the well-known short blossoming period. This large tree was then decorated with small Chinese lanterns and a variety of iconic Chinese decorations.

We then surrounded the large tree with (3) 8 ft. fully bloomed Cherry Blossom Trees, which surrounded the base of the tall tree, which just made the presentation a unique blend of the beginning of the blooming season to the prime of it.

When we photographed this display, shoppers passing by stopped and gazed, took pictures and read the banners, which provided an education about the history of Chinese New Year.
